Upholding Our Sustainability Commitments

Our sustainability objectives are aligned with our commitment to long-term value creation for all stakeholders.

As an environmental services company, Waste Connections is committed to operating responsibly while minimizing our environmental impact. We have reinforced that commitment through more than $500 million of investments in sustainability initiatives, investments in human capital, and ongoing progress toward our sustainability goals.

Our Sustainability Working Group regularly discusses sustainability-related issues, including our progress in achieving our sustainability targets. These targets were established through a comprehensive assessment of the issues most material to our business and our stakeholders, and incorporated investor feedback and peer benchmarking insights.

Management provides regular updates to the Board of Directors on sustainability-related matters, and progress toward our 15-year aspirational targets is reviewed by the Board and incorporated into incentive compensation.

We have made meaningful progress toward our sustainability objectives. Since our 2019 baseline, municipal solid waste (MSW) tons accepted at our landfills increased 13%, yet absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions have declined 15% and emissions intensity has decreased by 36% when accounting for our growth. Since 2018, recycling volumes processed and biogas beneficially recovered have increased 75% and 30%, respectively. Our human capital metrics have also continued to improve, with voluntary turnover and incident rates declining over the past three years by 52% and ~30%, respectively.
